The City Farmer

Welcome to City Farmer PH. Join me in the progress of my small urban farm setup. The urban farm is a small prototype located in Metro Manila. The farm uses the Aquaponic System.

At first i wanted to try a hydroponic setup, unfortunately a lot of hydroponic nutrients and materials are not available or are very expensive in the Philppines. The quest for more data led me to aquaponics. A more straight forward answer to the more complex hydroponic setup.

Late March 2008,i decided to build my own aquaponic setup right in front of my house. The total aquaponic system area size is 30 square meters.

This project is very interesting for me. It is my first urban farming startup. I do hope that this prototype will be the start of bigger things. In the future, i'd like to try a bigger sustainable integrated urban farm. Enough of the future, let me show you the present. Let the simple life begin!

Hi Cityfarmer - congratulations on your set up. I have been working with concrete for many years.Have you put enouhg reinforcing/steel into the floor? Also the corners of your fishpond will need reinforcing. Concrete slabs of a size that you have got have a habit of developing cracks. Make sure to put fresh water trough your whole system at least three times - then measure Ph. The concrete/plaster will leech out and push your Ph up too high.
I'm still working on my system - concrete GB and FT.

Hi Citifarmer, good looking setup, what is the capacity of the grow bed and tank? How many litres /gallons?
how long do you think it will take to flood the grow bed ?

heini ,murray thanks.

I think i put enough steel rebar reinforcing in the pond. i used 40 1/2 inch steal rebars on it to support the tank vertically and horizontally.

I havn't calculated yet the capacity of the growbed and tank.As for the flood time for the growbed, i atill don't know..I'll be doing more reading on backyard aquaponics. but right now, i have built my flood and drain system and bought my pump.
